Within the BSE Basic Materials Index, the top gainers were INDIA CEMENTS (up 4.7%) and INDIA GLYCOLS (up 3.9%). On the other hand, ORIENT PAPER (down 4.8%) and BIRLA CORPORATION (down 4.5%) were among the top losers.

What is BSE commodities index?

The BSE commodities index comprises constituents of the BSE Allcap index, that are classified under the basic materials or commodities sector.

The basic materials sector includes companies engaged in the discovery, development, and processing of raw materials. The sector includes companies engaged in mining and metal refining, chemical products, and forestry products.

This index was originally known as BSE basic material sector, which was later updated to BSE commodities index.

The index is calculated using a float-adjusted market cap weighted methodology.

The BSE commodities index is a collection of stocks and not a security that is traded on any stock exchange. Hence, we cannot buy it directly.

However, these two indices are considered to be too narrow by some, since they only track 30 and 50 stocks, respectively.

For broader tracking, you could use the BSE 200, BSE 500 or even the NSE 500 index.
